SIGN UP NOW TO HOST FOR THE UPCOMING REBELLION IN LONDON 21st APRIL 2023

Why should I become a host?

Support climate action by housing activists overnight

Not only will you be supporting Extinction Rebellion’s remarkable efforts, but housing a guest can reduce accommodation emissions by more than 80% and energy usage by more than 70%* compared to a hotel stay.

Mobilise as many people as possible for direct action

Make sure that everyone has the chance to make their voices heard by providing free or low-cost accommodation for those who need it.

Ensure that we mobilise and support anyone who wants to stand up for the cause.

Be human, not a hotel

We expect hosts to be natural, respectful and authentic to themselves and to their guests. There’s absolutely no pressure for you to act like a hotel. Basic comfort and basic kindness. A sofa or mattress on the floor is great.

Meet remarkable people from around the world and connect with your fellow rebels.

FAQs

Find answers to some of the more frequent questions about hosting here and further information in our Support Centre.

Why are guests charged booking fees?

The aim of the Rebel Homestay Network is for it to be a long term, self-sustaining platform. There are significant costs associated with operation and development, so for now, there are booking fees attached to each booking in order to support this work.

Guests will therefore be charged a small fee of around £3.50 per night. This will be cut in half for stays of 1 week or more.

Fees raised during the April Rebellion 2022 will be used for the next round of development and enable us to remove fees from all free hosts in the future.

I live outside of the city for the Rebellion - can I still sign up to host?

Yes. We’re asking everyone in the cities or the surrounding areas – within one hour’s train ride from the main station – to sign up as hosts.

The plan is also for xr.humanhotel.org to become a long-term, international platform for Extinction Rebellion – so we’d love you to sign up as a host wherever you are!

Can I host guests for free?

Yes. This is particularly useful if you live in accommodation that prohibits you from subletting for profit (for example a housing association or student halls).

Hosts can also charge a price per night for each guest. We’ve structured it this way because:

  1. A financial transaction, even a small one of £1 a night, helps both guests and hosts stay committed and discourages last minute no-shows or cancellations.

  2. We want to encourage those on low income to host who may struggle with additional hosting costs, i.e. electricity.

  3. A bank transaction between guest and host helps verify the host’s profile, strengthening the overall safety of the platform.

To ensure that the Network is not used solely for the purpose of making money, there’s a limit on what hosts can charge per night – currently set at £10 for a shared space, £20 for a private room, and £50 for a whole flat.

How much should I charge overnight guests?

The XR Homestay Network is about people, not profit. Though, we recognise that hosting overnight guests comes with extra costs for you.

Not everyone can shoulder the costs of hosting an extra person in their home, so if you need support in order to do so then we have prepared prepared a quick guide:

€0 – 10 for one guest in a room
€0 – 20 for one guest in an entire home

On top of this, you can charge a maximum of €10 per night for each additional guest.

Will I get to choose who stays in my house as a guest?

Absolutely, guests find host spaces that they want to book, and then hosts are able to view this booking request (including the guest’s profile) and decide whether to accept or not. You’ll also be able to chat privately with the guest before accepting, using the message function on the site.

Can I have more than one listing?

Yes. Hosts can list multiple spaces, including different rooms or whole flats. However, you can only have a maximum of 2 host space addresses on our platform. Within each address, you can list as many spaces (living room, guest room, outside space and entire home) options as you can. We do not allow professional listing managers in our community, nor do we allow more than 2 host space addresses.

To list multiple spaces within one address, sign in to your host profile, select ‘Manage listing’ and then ‘Upload a host space’. Don’t forget to publish your different host spaces when you’ve finished.

What are the terms and conditions?

We keep things simple and straightforward for our guests and hosts. Read further our full Terms of Use and Privacy Policy

How do I start hosting?

You can start hosting by joining the Extinction Rebellion Homestay Network, uploading and publishing your host space on our platform.
